Breakthrough in poultry egg production in Vietnam

The online conference “Production and Trade of poultry egg in Vietnam and the World, the market’s prospect” was held on October 9.

The organizer - Vietnam Poultry Association (VIPA) has invited the Department of Livestock Production and the Department of Processing and Market Development of Agricultural products (under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development - MARD), members of VIPA, and enterprises in the field of producing and trading poultry egg to participate discussing the market’s prospect.

Sharp increase in poultry egg production

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son - President of VIPA informs that VIPA is organizing many activities in the coming time to honor and promote the poultry egg production sector of Vietnam. These activities will contribute to the development of the sector, and in response to the 25th anniversary of “World Egg Day”.

As in some reports and reviews of specialists, the global market of poultry egg in 2021 will grow to US$ 227 billion of market’s value, up from US$ 213 billion of 2020. In the period of 2012 - 2020, on average, the world’s poultry egg production grew 2.9% annually.

In 2020, global export of chicken egg reached about 2 million tons in quantity and US$ 3.5 billion in value. The big exporters were the Netherland (409,000 tons), Turkey (281,000 tons), Poland (196,000 tons), the US (145,000 tons), Germany (109,000 tons), etc. These countries accounted for 78% of the total global export amount.

The global market of poultry egg will reach US$ 297 billion as forecasted to 2025, and the double growth (in quantity and value) will be at 6.7%. To 2030, the global market of poultry egg keeps expanding and will reach 138 million of tons

In the same time, population of the developing countries will be about 6.9 billion people by 2030, and by 2050 will account for 85% of world population. In these countries, the demand for poultry egg and meat will rise up in the coming years.

In recent years in Vietnam, the poultry sector grows fairly high. The poultry egg production increases year after year, from slightly over 8.8 billion of eggs in 2015 to over 16 billion of eggs in 2020. The average growth rate poultry egg production in the period of 2015 - 2020 is 12.67% per year, 4 times higher than the global average growth in the same period.

However, poultry egg consumption in Vietnam is still far after the world’s. A Vietnamese consumes 149 poultry eggs per year, while on average, a consumer in the world has 210 - 220 eggs per year. Even some countries have a much higher rate with over 300 poultry eggs per year, such as Mexico, China, Japan, Spain, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.

Consumption decreases strongly due to the Covid-19

“There are countries emerging in poultry egg production, such as China, the US, the EU, and India,” says Ms, Tran Ngoc Yen - Director for Products SectorAnalysis of AgroMonitor.

These are countries that have a developed food industry and are densely populated. However, in the context of the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, these countries are also facing a lot of difficulties in production.

Regarding the domestic market, the current egg distribution channel is 50% to households for daily meals and 50% to canteens. However, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, many factories, schools, restaurants, canteens... had to close or operate irregularly. Another important factor is the low awareness of people about the real role of eggs in daily life, that combines to let the market's consumption decreasing significantly.

Currently, some industries that use eggs as raw materials, such as confectionery production, are being stagnant. In particular, the biggest difficulty for the poultry industry is the continuously increasing price of animal feed.

Vietnam has many advantages in production, such as climate, a long history of husbandry among the people, the sensitive abilities of enterprises in applying new technologies, etc. However, in the curent situation affected bt the Covid-19 pandemic, there will not be much expectation for the last months of 2021.

Some specialists say, it should wait till the begining of 2022 may the global market will have more chances to run as usual and grow as expected, when the rate of vaccinated covers a much larger proportion of population.

Speaking at the online conference, representatives from the producing and trading enterprises share opinions on the development ways ahead of the poultry egg sector. They propose solutions for the VIPA to work on with the government agencies, minitries in the coming time to help developing the poultry egg sector in particular and the Vietnam's husbandry in general.

Speakers agree that the prospect of Vietnam's poultry egg sector still has an wide room for development, not only to solve the nutrinion aspect for Vietnamese but also create job oppotunities for million of farmer nationwide.

In the coming time, speakers at the conference propose MARD to map out a clear orientation for the egg sector of Vietnam to meet the demand of consumption in the country, and look forward for export.

The MARD is also proposed to work on policies to help VIPA with propagation about the egg sector, to develop programs to stimulate egg consumption, such as the program to approach schools, hospitals, nursing homes, etc, to expand the egg consumption market.

VIPA determines these policies wil change people's habits and awareness about eggs, and from there helping the egg sector have a basis for sustainable development in the future.

The potential for Vietnam's egg sector is bright as the country is becoming a 100 million people market in the near future. There were difficulties, hardship competitiveness currently, but specialists say they will pass soon.
