According to the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, in the first eight months of 2021, the country's total cashew exports reached 876,531 tonnes, up 350% compared to the first eight months of 2020.
99% of Cambodian cashew exports are to Vietnam, reaching nearly 870 thousand tonnes, and more than 3 thousand tonnes are exported to China and Thailand.
In 2021, Cambodian cashew production has increased due to increased cashew farming areas and cashew reserves from 2020.
Vietnam's cashew businesses promote the purchase of Cambodian cashew for processing and supplying cashew kernels to the international market.
Because of the high demand, cashew prices in Cambodia this year had increased to KHR 4,000 per kilogram (equal to US$ 1 per kilogram) compared to KHR 3,500 per kilogram last year.
According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in the first eight months of this year, Cambodian cashew exports to Vietnam were 1.09 million tonnes, over 220,000 tonnes than the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture's statistics.
Therefore, the General Department of Customs has recently directed the southern provinces' Customs Departments to strengthen the inspection of the origin of Cambodia's cashews import. It is to clarify doubts about whether cashews may have a non-ASEAN source with 5% import tax but recorded as Cambodian origin with 0% import tax to enter Vietnam.
