In Tam Giang commune, Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam, there is a primeval mangrove forest with an area of dozens of hectares located close to the sea.

Most of them are fish sauce, mangrove, and cork trees, many of which are very large and ancient. This mangrove forest is like a wave shield, especially during the stormy season, protecting the environment, beautiful green landscape, and fresh climate.

But the mangrove forests here have gradually dried up in the past few years.

Many hectares of mangrove forest stretching from Dong Xuan village to Dong Binh, Tam Giang commune, nearly 2km long, died dry.

Viewed from above, the mangrove forest, with its luxuriant and dense trees in the past, only has a few green trees scattered about.

Thousands of mangrove trees have dried up, their trunks are bare, all their leaves are burned like dry firewood. The bottom of the tree is filled with floating waste.

Residents of Dong Xuan village said that this primeval mangrove forest has existed since ancient times. There are mangroves, fish sauce, and cork trees that are decades old, and some are more than 100 years old. In addition to its protective function, this place has a rich ecosystem and abundant fish and shrimp for fishermen to catch.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vinh - vice chairman of Tam Giang Commune People's Committee - said the total area of mangrove forests in the locality is about 25 hectares. Since the rainy and stormy season at the end of 2020, the mangrove forest has dried up, and statistics show that more than 5 hectares of forest have completely died and cannot regenerate.

Previously, when the forest died, the commune sent a report to the district inviting experts to inspect, evaluate, and find the cause, but there was still no specific conclusion as to the cause of the tree death.

Due to the commune's lack of resources, it has proposed to superiors to have a solution to plant and restore mangrove forests. The district also has a project to plant and restore forests, but it is known that it will not be able to be implemented until 2025.

Also according to Mr. Vinh, the mangrove forest in the commune has been around for a long time and has many uses, such as wave and wind protection, especially during storm season for residential areas, and a place to shelter boats and boats.

In addition, under the mangrove forests there are rich and diverse aquatic resources for fishermen to catch. "The locality hopes that the forest will soon be restored to preserve this precious mangrove forest" - Mr. Vinh said.
