Nha Trang University is implementing the project "Training course against illegal, undeclared and unregulated (IUU) fishing, regarding monitoring, control, and supervision (MCS) and staff exchange program” funded by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) from 2023 to 2026.
According to the project's operation plan, Nha Trang University will organize the first MCS training course with the participation of 40 students from Southeast Asian countries, Timor Leste, and Papua New Guinea.
The course will be taught by lecturers from Nha Trang University and experts from the Australian Fisheries Authority and some experts from many countries.
During the training, trainees will have complete theoretical and practical knowledge related to fisheries monitoring, control, and supervision. They will be trained to effectively solve the problem of IUU fishing in Southeast Asia.
In addition, participants were introduced to and shared their knowledge of national legal and regulatory frameworks, and regional and international basis for the implementation of MCS to combat IUU fishing. As well as introducing and helping participants to identify and apply MCS tools, technologies, and processes, supporting MCS activities that contribute to effective fisheries management in the region.
In addition, trainees will also learn MCS operation planning skills and be guided by experts in surveying fishing vessels to determine the possibility of IUU fishing. This also includes understanding the social aspects of fishing in Southeast Asia, especially understanding the strategy to improve gender equality under the MCS framework.
