According to the Vietnam Food Association, India's rice exports in 2020 reached 14.2 million tons, so this country continued to be the largest rice exporter in the world.
During the past year, Thailand's rice exports fell sharply to 5.27 million tons from 7.58 million tons in 2019. This was the lowest volume of Thailand's rice exports in the past 20 years.
Meanwhile, although Vietnam's rice exports also decreased in volume, but by a small 1.9% and reached 6.25 million tons.
Thus, in 2020, Vietnam surpassed Thailand to return to the 2nd position in the world’s rice export, after many years being at the third place, after India and Thailand.
In 2021, Vietnam still has a chance to hold this position, because the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand has set a target of exporting only 6 million tons of rice this year, while Vietnam can still keep its export volume at least equivalent to 2020.
