The series of programmes is a strategic policy in the implementation of Directive 29/CT-TTg dated July 23, 2020 of the Prime Minister on urgent solutions for wildlife management.
Nguyen Anh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Forest Protection Department said that Nghe An Province was the one with the largest natural forest area in Vietnam. "Forests play a particularly important role in the strategy of economic and social development, national security and defense, and environmental protection. The system of legal documents and regulations in biodiversity protection and nature conservation is fully promulgated by the State, but the implementation of coordination work between agencies, units and localities still have limitations," he said.
"Violations of regulations on wildlife management are still happening," he said, adding that activities to curb wildlife consumption would receive better co-operation and positive results.
Director of Pu Mat National Park, Tran Xuan Cuong informed that the Wildlife Conservation Centre in Vietnam has cooperated with the park since 2018, rescuing nearly 500 animals, establishing and operating the Forest Protection Group with 16 members to promote patrolling and protecting forests.
The centre also took activities to raise awareness of about 100,000 people living in the buffer zone. Social research and field research activities have been continuously implemented, he said.
“The closely coordinated process has markedly improved forest protection patrols and law enforcement in Pu Mat National Park. Illegal hunting activities decreased by 80 per cent, statistics from camera traps also recorded the active recovery of wildlife populations, including many rare species,” he said.
On the same day, the Nghe An Provincial Forest Protection Department in collaboration with the Centre for Conservation of Wildlife in Vietnam (Save Vietnam's Wildlife - SVW) held a workshop on "Strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation in combating poaching, trade, consumption and use of wild animals in Nghe An province”.
This is an important and practical programme to find effective solutions, promote close coordination between agencies and departments in wildlife conservation.
