Thailand changes cassava starch and chips’ export prices

As a result of the world’s burgeoning demand for cassava import, in February 2021, Thailand re-set the price floor of exported cassava products including starch and chips.

According to the Industry and Trade Information Center (under the Ministry of Industry and Trade), in mid-February 2021, the Thai Tapioca Starch Association raised the price floor of exported starch to US$ 480 per ton from US$ 475 as of 10 days before while its sale price climbed to Baht 13.6 per kilogram from Baht 13.5.

Meanwhile, the Thai Yam and Tapioca Factories Association set the price floor of exported chips to US$ 265 – 270 for each ton (as per FOB Bangkok), US$ 0.5 per kilogram higher than that of 10 days before, while the raw cassava’s was kept at Baht 2.45 – 2.60 per kilogram.

On the report of the Thai Customs Department, in comparison with 2019, in 2020, Thailand exported over 3.06 million tons of cassava chips, worth Baht 21.39 billion (equivalent to US$ 713.08 million), which is an increase of 27.5% in volume and 31.4% in value. In particular, export to China accounted for 99.93% of the total quantity, equal to 3.06 million tons, Baht 21.37 billion (US$ 712.54 million), 21.8% more in volume and 24.1% in value.

Same comparison, Thailand's 2020 tapioca starch export reached 2.73 million tons, worth Baht 35.41 billion (US$ 1.18 billion) – a 2.1% decrease in volume and 6.5% in value. To that export to China contributed 64.41% – 1.76 million tons, Baht 22.22 billion (US$ 740.87 million), 15.5% higher in volume and 10.4% in value.
