China has suspended imports of frozen shrimp from Ecuador’s fourth-largest exporter - Sociedad Nacional de Galapagos, or Songa after detecting white spot virus in its shrimp products.

According to the Việt Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Ecuador’s Aquaculture Department confirmed the suspension.

Under an agreement between China and Ecuador since December 2019, each batch of shrimp exported from Ecuador to China is tested for white spot virus.

In December 2020, Ecuador’s shrimp exports reached 43,000 tonnes worth US$ 220 million, marking a decline of 10 per cent in volume and a decline of 20 per cent in value compared with those of December 2019.

Ecuador’s shrimp exports dropped in December 2020 mostly because its shrimp exports to China reduced 36 per cent compared with that of December 2019, down to 17,500 tonnes.

Songa is a major shrimp producer in Ecuador with an export value in 2018 reaching US$243 million.
