The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Hai Phong City on November 11 announced that authorities culled 12 pigs which were tested positive for the virus that causes African Swine Fever (ASF).

The ill pigs were found late last month at two slaughterhouses in Kien Quoc Commune, the city’s Kien Thuy District. It was reported that wholesalers bought and transported the pigs from other provinces to the city without any legal documents proving their origins and quarantine certificates.

According to the agriculture department, since the beginning of this year, the city’s pig population grow well. Currently, the city has over 144,000 pigs, an increase of nearly 22 percent compared with its pig number of last year.

However, Thai Binh – a neighboring province of Hai Phong – is among 28 provinces across Vietnam that report having ASF outbreaks for less than 21 days.
